April 18, 2005 Powers of Attorney in Ontario
I have been asked lately to make available information on the legal concept of Powers of Attorney in Ontario. I am a businessman and I am not to be relied on to provide accurate advice on these matters. The best advice that I can give is to advise you to speak with your attorney. If you don't have one, go and find a good one. In the absence of legal advice, I suggest that you read the Attorney General of the Government of Ontario's advice in their Power of Attorney Kit. You could also consult with someone who has successfully completed a paralegal program. If the site is unavailable, here is a copy of the governments Power of Attorney and "Living Wills" - Some Questions and Answers and one of the Power of Attorney Kit. These are a copy of what was on the Government of Ontario's site on April 18, 2005 and the reader is responsible for verifying if that is the most current advice on the topic. It is important to stress that as far as living wills go, that you inform your Doctor, Lawyer, the person burdened with your Power of Attorney and family of your specific wishes and have them acknowledge that they will adhere to your wishes at least verbally to you and preferably in front of other concerned family members. Get on with it and good luck.
