I
receive many comments telling me that my articles and speeches are very
clear.
Do you
really understand the message that you are trying to deliver? Does
the reader understand you? Do you wish to be
understood? Are you just trying
to impress?
Think about
form once you understand what and to whom, you are trying to communicate.
If you have
something to communicate in writing, the
Fogg Index WILL help.
Try the following test.....
- Take a passage of 100 words.
- Calculate average number of words per
sentence to give a value A.
- Count number of polysyllables in the
passage to obtain a value B - a polysyllable is a word with three or more
syllables; do not count "ed" and
"ing" where they are used
as word endings.
“Non-words” like 1951 and are one syllable..
- Having derived the values of A and B,
calculate I from the following equation.....
I = (A + B) x 0.4
...where...
I is the index value
A is the average number of words per sentence
B is the number of polysyllables.
The value of I will equal the number of years
schooling or online
college required by a reader to understand the passage that has been
evaluated.
A score of 11 is high, 6 is much better.
Respect your reader and don't hide your
message!
